FAQ
Answering Your Queries
ARE THERE CLASSES JUST FOR ADULTS?
Yes, Monday evenings are when all our Adults-Only classes are held.
CAN I STOP AFTER ONE TERM?
Yes if you’re just interested in learning to skate for fun, but we recommend you continue until Level 4 so you have mastered all of the basic skating skills which will teach you how to use your edges and perform crossovers.
If you’re interested in joining Ice Hockey Academy you need to continue to Level 6 to ensure you have mastered the basics of skating to get the most out of this course, more information can be found on the Ice Hockey Academy page.
If you’re interested in competitive Figure Skating you will need to master all the elements up to Free Skate 4, more information on this can be found on the Figure Skating page.
I WANT TO LEARN HOCKEY, DO I STILL NEED SKATE SCHOOL?
Maybe. Our Ice Hockey Academy courses are designed for students that have mastered the basics of skating. We require all new skaters to complete Skate School Level 6 to ensure they can keep up to get the most out of this course, more information can be found on the Ice Hockey Academy page.
If you’re not sure you can perform all the minimum elements to the required standards, you can book an evaluation through Skate School, these take 5-10 minutes to complete.
ALL THE SKATE SCHOOL COACHES WEAR FIGURE SKATES BUT I WANT TO LEARN HOCKEY, IS THE SKATING THE SAME?
The foundations of skating in either figure skates or hockey skates are the same whichever ice sport you choose to continue with, these include learning basic forward and backward strokes, how to use your edges effectively, perform crossovers, and how to stop.
For those looking to continue with ice hockey, we require all new skaters to complete Skate School Level 6 to ensure they can keep up to get the most out of this course. More information can be found on the Ice Hockey Academy page.
WHAT IS THE CLASS INTAKE MINIMUM AGE?
Our Tiny Tots start from 3 years old.
DO YOU HAVE CASUAL CLASSES?
Yes for our adult only classes. These are Monday evenings. The cost for this is $45 per lesson. All other ages require the attendee to join the full course.
CAN I CHANGE BETWEEN DAYS?
Yes, subject to availability in the alternate class of your level. Please speak to reception if you want to change your class day.
CAN I BOOK INTO CLASSES MID-TERM?
Enrollments for courses close in Week 1 of each term.
If you have just completed Sate School Intro, you can continue to Skate School mid-term to continue your lessons. Please speak to Reception to enroll and we will pro-rate the course fee for the remaining weeks left in the term.
IF I CAN ALREADY SKATE WHICH CLASS SHOULD I JOIN?
It will be best to book an Evaluation with our Skate School to select the most appropriate class level for you to join. Evaluations only take 5-10 minutes to complete.
DO I HAVE TO START WITH THE INTRO CLASSES OR CAN I BOOK INTO THE SKATE SCHOOL PROGRAM CLASSES?
The Intro short course is the entry point for the skate school. This covers the first Aussie Skate level that is no longer included in our Skate School.
WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE FOR CLASS?
Before your first class of the term please arrive 30 minutes early and bring a copy of your enrolment confirmation to Reception along with your membership card if you’re a current student. When you enrol into Intro you will be given a membership card for checking in before each class. Your first card is free with the enrolment of the course however replacement card fees do apply if you lose your card, please see the Terms & Conditions page for the latest fees.
Please ensure you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to all classes so you have sufficient time to check in and get your skates on. You must check in at Reception before each class so we can mark attendance.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO CLASS?
It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing that allows lots of movement, with layers you can take on and off easily. The Ice ArenA is cold and you will want warmer layers while off the ice which can be removed during class as you warm up. We also recommend gloves as fingers get cold.
You are welcome to wear any protective equipment if it makes you feel more comfortable but Skate School classes are a slower pace for learning. Some popular items are skate helmets, wrist brace/guards, volleyball knee pads (these allow for the full range of motion required in ice skating, please avoid rigid ‘skating’ knee pads) and those at higher levels may wish to invest in a pair of padded pants/shorts.
Don’t forget to bring water.
IF WE HAVE AN EXTENDED HOLIDAY PLANNED, CAN I REGISTER FOR ONLY PART OF THE TERM, OR GET A REFUND FOR THE LESSONS MISSED?
Participants who go away on extended holidays cannot make up the missed classes on another class day or receive a refund or credit for missed classes.
