Learn to play ice hockey at the Ice Hockey Academy

Beginner Classes

To begin your ice hockey journey, you first need basic skating skills.

Starting in the Skate School courses will get you comfortable with the fundamentals of skating. Students wishing to join Ice Hockey Academy only need to complete Level 5&6 / Adult Novice / Adult Learn to Skate  of Skate School before transitioning to the Ice Hockey Academy

Learn to play ice hockey at the Ice Hockey Academy. Ice Hockey is a game that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike, it can be played for a lifetime in a community that is friendly with a genuine passion for the sport. Ice hockey also develops skills that can be used both on and off the ice. 

Professional coaches guide students through gameplay skills and tactics as well as specific skating skills for ice hockey. The courses are available for children and adults, from beginners to those wanting to take ice hockey to a professional level. Our courses include  Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and the specialist class Power & Edges.

LEARN TO PLAY – Junior / ADULT

Once you transition to the Ice Hockey Academy you will need to invest in a basic “Hockey Kit”. The course runs in line with the public school terms and provides pathways and progress through the divisions and grades of hockey.

Booking is available online and at Reception. We also offer drop-in options, these can be arranged and paid for at Reception. 

Ice Hockey Academy terms align with the public school terms.

AGE

  • We offer classes for all adults and juniors
  • Juniors: Ages 5 – 17
    Adults: 18+

  • Neck Guard (Mandatory)

  • Shin Guards

  • Hockey Pants


Helmets must be as sanctioned by IHA i.e. Juniors & Women have full cage or fishbowl, Men are also allowed Half Visor

When you enrol in a full term you also receive 10 x FREE Skate Passes valid for Public Skate and  Stick & Puck sessions (small ice only) to practice in your own time.

 

ADVANCED HOCKEY CLASSES

Aside from the standard kit skaters attending the ADVANCED classes are required  to have the following in their kit.

  • Shoulder & Chest Protection
  • Elbows Pads

POWER & EDGES

Maximize your performance and improve your technique. Focusing on both the effectiveness and efficiency of your skating, Power & Edges is for those looking to take their game to the next level. Ice hockey is a fast-paced game, requiring both quick bursts of energy and endurance to perform in 3x 20 minute periods. Improving your skating technique for each stroke, learning to use your edges correctly and conditioning your muscles for the work required will greatly improve your game.

REQUIREMENTS

Students attending this course are expected to be proficient skaters already. This course is recommended for those in Ice Hockey Academy Advanced and those playing in B Grade and above.

Some students from Intermediate may be eligible, please chat with your coach to see whether Power & Edges would be beneficial to you at this stage of your hockey journey.


EQUIPMENT

It is highly recommended that players arrive in their full kit as prescribed in Ice Hockey Academy Basic to Advanced Courses, please refer to this section.

Camp 360

Ice Arena run Hockey Camp 360 through the year. Keep your eye out for the next camp. Dates will posted below

The camps are run through the school holidays for Hockey Skaters to developed to cover all facets of playing professional Ice Hockey.

Improve Ice Hockey skills while also developing the skills and mindset of a professional athlete, including sports discipline, teamwork, leadership skills, goal setting, and perseverance, all part of positive life skills both on and off the ice, as well as a whole lot more that can be learned from the coolest sport at The Coolest Place in Town.

Budding hockey players learn what it takes to improve their game or take it to a professional level, have the opportunity to meet their sporting heroes, make new friends and improve their skills, all while having fun.

The minimum requirement is to be able to comfortably skate forward and backward with crossovers and slaloms, perform 2 foot turns, and have completed at least two terms of Ice Hockey Academy


STICK & PUCK SESSIONS

Ice Arena run weekly “stick & puck” sessions throughout the year please see schedule below.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

AUSSIE SKATE REGISTRATION – All skaters enrolled in Skate School must register with Aussie Skate at: https://www.aussieskate.au Aussie Skate Membership provides: Personal accident/injury insurance when undertaking an Aussie Skate lesson and when competing a sanctioned Aussie Skate event.

REFUND POLICY – Ice Arena has a no refund policy for “change of mind” after start of term. No refunds after week one unless due to illness/injury. A medical certificate is required for a refund to be considered.

CAN I MOVE TO A DIFFERENT CLASS DAY/TIME FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS DUE TO A TEMPORARY CONFLICT AND THEN RETURN TO THE ORIGINAL CLASS? The short answer is No. If there’s availability, you can move on a permanent basis, but you cannot move back and forth between classes. Movement between classes and levels is only possible during the first two weeks of the term and must be approved and processed by the Skate School Manager.

PARENT / GUARDIAN ROLES CAN I DROP MY CHILD OFF FOR CLASSES AND LEAVE THE ARENA? Only if your child is 12 years or over and a parent or other responsible adult is contactable during the class. Please ensure we have emergency contact details on file. A parent/guardian must be in the venue if the child is under 12 years.

MISSED CLASSES (I HAVE TO MISS A CLASS) CAN I ORGANISE ANOTHER CLASS TO MAKE UP FOR THE MISSED CLASS? Skaters are assigned to specific groups and cannot attend a class on another day/time unless they make a permanent move to that class (if spaces are available). Movement between classes and levels is only possible during the first two weeks of the terms and must be communicated to the Skate School Manager for approval and processing. In lieu of missed classes, Skate School offers a maximum of ten additional Public Skating Session passes which can be used during the term. These passes (loaded onto your access card) expire on the day of your last class for the term.
